2. In-Depth Technical Decomposition & Root Cause

Section titled “2. In-Depth Technical Decomposition & Root Cause”

Windows Services for NFS enables Windows Server to host Unix/Linux POSIX file systems using the Open Network Computing Remote Procedure Call (ONCRPC) protocol.

The vulnerability resides in the External Data Representation (XDR) deserialization logic implemented in the NFS kernel driver. When decoding variable-length opaque arrays, the driver multiplies the array element count by the element size to determine the allocation size. An integer overflow occurs when handling large count values, causing a small memory chunk to be allocated while the full payload is copied into it.

This results in a pool buffer overflow, allowing an unauthenticated remote attacker to corrupt kernel pool memory and execute arbitrary code with ring 0 privileges.

// Integer overflow in NFS XDR array decoding
bool_t xdr_opaque_array(XDR *xdrs, caddr_t *arrp, u_int *sizep) {
u_int count = *sizep;
// BUG: 32-bit integer multiplication overflows!
u_int alloc_size = count * sizeof(NFS_ELEMENT);
*arrp = ExAllocatePoolWithTag(NonPagedPoolNx, alloc_size, 'SFN');
return xdr_opaque(xdrs, *arrp, count * sizeof(NFS_ELEMENT)); // Out-of-bounds copy into pool
}

3. Attack Vectors, Exploitation & Threat Scenarios

Section titled “3. Attack Vectors, Exploitation & Threat Scenarios”

5. Remediation Strategy & Mitigation Measures

Section titled “5. Remediation Strategy & Mitigation Measures”

Apply September 2026 security updates. Disable Windows Services for NFS if not required, or block TCP/UDP ports 111 and 2049 from untrusted networks.
