2. In-Depth Technical Decomposition & Root Cause

Section titled “2. In-Depth Technical Decomposition & Root Cause”

The Windows DNS Server service (dns.exe) is standard infrastructure in Active Directory networks, often running directly on Domain Controllers.

The vulnerability lies in the DNS decompression subroutines responsible for parsing compressed domain names within DNS Resource Records (RR), specifically during processing of SIG, KEY, or dynamic UPDATE records. When the server reconstructs pointer offsets pointing backwards into the DNS packet, an integer signedness bug in length validation allows an offset to point outside the allocated query buffer.

This enables an unauthenticated remote attacker to overflow heap chunks allocated by dns.exe, redirecting execution to shellcode executing under NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM without requiring credentials or user interaction.

// DNS Resource Record decompression routine in dns.exe
DNS_STATUS Dns_DecompressName(PBYTE PacketBase, PBYTE CurrentOffset, PBYTE OutputBuffer) {
INT16 PointerOffset = *(PINT16)CurrentOffset & 0x3FFF;
// VULNERABILITY: PointerOffset is treated as signed 16-bit integer!
// Negative offset calculation bypasses upper bound check against PacketLength.
PBYTE Target = PacketBase + PointerOffset;
memcpy(OutputBuffer, Target, Dns_GetLabelLength(Target)); // Unbounded heap copy
}

3. Attack Vectors, Exploitation & Threat Scenarios

Section titled “3. Attack Vectors, Exploitation & Threat Scenarios”

5. Remediation Strategy & Mitigation Measures

Section titled “5. Remediation Strategy & Mitigation Measures”

Apply September 2026 updates immediately. Restrict dynamic DNS updates to secure authenticated clients and block untrusted external subnets from reaching internal DNS listeners.
