2. In-Depth Technical Decomposition & Root Cause

Section titled “2. In-Depth Technical Decomposition & Root Cause”

Windows Shell (shell32.dll, windows.storage.dll) manages desktop and file system interactions, including the parsing of Shell Links (.lnk), shell namespaces, and file metadata.

The vulnerability resides in the parsing of serialized ExtraData blocks within Shell Item IDs (SHITEMID). When a crafted file specifies an anomalous block size for property store metadata, the parser miscalculates buffer offsets, copying data past the end of the heap-allocated property buffer.

Because thumbnail extractors and preview hosts execute automatically upon opening a folder, an attacker delivering a crafted file via SMB share, ZIP archive, or cloud drive achieves execution immediately upon folder navigation.

DWORD dwBlockSize;
pStream->Read(&dwBlockSize, sizeof(DWORD), NULL);
// VULNERABILITY: dwBlockSize unchecked against allocated buffer
PBYTE pBuffer = (PBYTE)LocalAlloc(LPTR, 256);
return pStream->Read(pBuffer, dwBlockSize, NULL); // Overflows 256-byte buffer!
}

3. Attack Vectors, Exploitation & Threat Scenarios

Section titled “3. Attack Vectors, Exploitation & Threat Scenarios”

5. Remediation Strategy & Mitigation Measures

Section titled “5. Remediation Strategy & Mitigation Measures”

Apply September 2026 updates immediately. Disable the Explorer Preview Pane and block untrusted SMB file browsing.
