2. In-Depth Technical Decomposition & Root Cause

Section titled “2. In-Depth Technical Decomposition & Root Cause”

The Hyper-V Virtual Switch driver (vmswitch.sys) handles virtualized networking between guest VMs and physical network interfaces.

When Large Receive Offload (LRO) or Receive Segment Coalescing (RSC) is enabled on the virtual switch, vmswitch.sys aggregates incoming TCP packets into coalesced segment buffers. An integer calculation error in fragment descriptor tracking allows an oversized network packet to overflow the pre-allocated packet descriptor buffer in non-paged kernel memory.

This grants an attacker on a tenant VM the ability to escape virtualization boundaries and achieve full administrative control over the virtualization host and all co-hosted virtual machines.

3. Attack Vectors, Exploitation & Threat Scenarios

Section titled “3. Attack Vectors, Exploitation & Threat Scenarios”

5. Remediation Strategy & Mitigation Measures

Section titled “5. Remediation Strategy & Mitigation Measures”

Apply September 2026 updates immediately. If patching must be deferred, disable Receive Segment Coalescing (RSC) on virtual switches using PowerShell: Set-VMSwitch -Name <SwitchName> -EnableRsc $false.
