2. In-Depth Technical Decomposition & Root Cause

Section titled “2. In-Depth Technical Decomposition & Root Cause”

Windows DHCP Server maintains an in-memory linked list of active client lease contexts (DHCP_CLIENT_CONTEXT).

When a client sends a DHCPRELEASE packet simultaneously with a new DHCPREQUEST on a separate thread, the synchronization lock protecting the client context object is released prematurely during cleanup. The releasing thread frees the context memory block back to the heap pool while the worker thread servicing the concurrent request continues reading and dereferencing function pointers on the freed object (CWE-416).

By spraying the heap with controlled payload buffers immediately after releasing the context, the attacker reclaims the freed chunk and directs execution flow to their shellcode.

3. Attack Vectors, Exploitation & Threat Scenarios

Section titled “3. Attack Vectors, Exploitation & Threat Scenarios”

5. Remediation Strategy & Mitigation Measures

Section titled “5. Remediation Strategy & Mitigation Measures”

Apply September 2026 updates immediately. Limit DHCP packet broadcast rates on edge switches and monitor svchost.exe stability.
