2. In-Depth Technical Decomposition & Root Cause

Section titled “2. In-Depth Technical Decomposition & Root Cause”

Netlogon (netlogon.dll, running inside lsass.exe) handles domain logon requests, secure channel establishment between domain members and Domain Controllers, and machine account password updates.

CVE-2026-72982 resides in the parsing of negotiated secure channel parameters during RPC method calls (such as NetrServerAuthenticate3 or NetrServerReqChallenge). The routine fails to validate the size of incoming cryptographic challenge buffers before copying them into a fixed-size stack frame buffer.

Because this memory copy occurs prior to cryptographic verification of client credentials, an unauthenticated attacker located anywhere on the corporate network can trigger an unbounded stack overflow, redirecting execution to arbitrary shellcode inside the domain controller’s security authority.

3. Attack Vectors, Exploitation & Threat Scenarios

Section titled “3. Attack Vectors, Exploitation & Threat Scenarios”

5. Remediation Strategy & Mitigation Measures

Section titled “5. Remediation Strategy & Mitigation Measures”

Prioritize domain controller patching with September 2026 cumulative updates. Enforce RPC sealing and signing via Group Policy (RequireSignOrSeal = 1), and isolate Domain Controllers using network micro-segmentation.
