2. In-Depth Technical Decomposition & Root Cause

Section titled “2. In-Depth Technical Decomposition & Root Cause”

SSTP is Microsoft’s native VPN tunneling protocol, encapsulating PPP traffic across HTTPS sessions (TCP port 443) to traverse firewalls. It is implemented in sstpsvc.dll within the Routing and Remote Access Service (RRAS).

The vulnerability exists in the handler for SSTP_MSG_CALL_CONNECT_REQUEST control messages. When parsing client attribute negotiation lists (e.g. hash algorithm and crypto binding attributes), the service copies the client-specified attribute value into a local stack buffer without verifying that the length attribute matches the destination capacity.

Because this endpoint is by definition exposed to the public Internet on corporate VPN gateways, this vulnerability represents an immediate remote perimeter penetration vector for threat actors and ransomware operators.

3. Attack Vectors, Exploitation & Threat Scenarios

Section titled “3. Attack Vectors, Exploitation & Threat Scenarios”

5. Remediation Strategy & Mitigation Measures

Section titled “5. Remediation Strategy & Mitigation Measures”

Apply September 2026 updates immediately. If SSTP is not required on perimeter servers, disable the SSTP VPN interface in RRAS or restrict port 443 access to authorized source IP ranges.
